02am is an 4 track ep by the young producer hekkla from eindhoven in the netherlands. the first track is sunset strip , a slowly build house track that moves like the last waves of heat at the end of a hot summers day, walking home feeling satisfied, all ready for the night. saturday morning sentimentality is a hard to pinpoint track that sounds like the bastard son of a trio between the melancholic side of cyndi lauper, alphaville and the echoes of a cheesy saturday morning cartoon theme song from the late 80 s. on the other side memories of tau ceti feels like tumbling into space with only the memories left of a good time on an alien world, accelerating faster and faster but still enjoying it, even though you know that the vacuum of space will eventually kill you. finishing with the hardest track no math , because, boys and girls, it s no math... hand stamped artwork by frank koedood.

alex suarez is part of a new breed of producers based out of brooklyn carving out their own unique sound experimenting in the world of raw primordial electronics. under the name cienfuegos, he has prior releases on brooklyn s primitive languages imprint as well as the france s unknown precept label-with his new -lost in god s country- ep we see him debut on the new york centered bank records. through the four tracks cienfuegos harkens back to the time of early industrial music, not far off from the early transmissions of spk or even hinting at sounds akin to e.g. oblique graph. suarez has a knack for developing textures and tension in his music sewing it all together with plodding rhythms and the occasional creeper vocal. heavyweight stuff coming most highly recommended.

a side track ‘’1840&#8242,’ (feat. contrapunct) is the result of taking a violin built by jean-baptiste vuillaume in the year 1840, played by our in-house virtuoso now known as contrapunct and making a sample kit / sound kit with it yes, this means all the sounds you hear on this song are sourced from an old and beautiful violin. using original recordings combined with different manipulation techniques, the trio deliver to the plate over 12 minutes of intensity. one can explain it like this perhaps……….. you are high in the blue sky walking a high wire over an ocean of beautiful coral reef, still maintaining balance, but looking down at the view beneath and thinking- “if i got to go- there cannot be much better ways!

the hidden meaning of number 13 is change, the death of something and its rebirth. this is the idea behind gabriel dor & bordoys new album 13, which is meant to be a turning point on their career. influenced by old school techno but also by modern sounds, after 6 years of production partnership, theyve decided to release their first entirely unpublished lp. the album, made out of 13 cuts, starts with a dark intro that paves the way into a forceful kind of techno, followed by vintage sounds with gloomy touches and sometimes even emotional ones. they have used many instruments and samples discovered along the way on this composition process, plus lots of others found in the previous years. the sounds put together on this album have been carefully picked to preserve their uniqueness, while trying to walk on a different path.

gouru is launching its own label, submersive, with an ep from brendon moeller aka. echologist, including a remix from french duo hbtvsk (voiski & heartbeat).in 2014, to celebrate the 4th birthday of the webzine gouru, brendon moeller and hbtvsk were invited to play at la machine du moulin rouge (paris). following a car accident on his way to the airport of new york, brendon was unable to appear and play. to make up for this unfortunate incident, gouru offered brendon the inauguration of its new label submersive, and invited heartbeat & voiski aka hbtvsk, the duo he was supposed to share the stage with, to remix one track. 2 years later, the first ep of the label gathers all 3 artists who were not able to share the decks on stage, on the same record. as brendon himself says , “all good things take time” and instead of evoking the nostalgy of a party that did not happen, the record opens the doors of the imagination and takes us to a powerful collaboration between 2 artists’ generations, thereby showing us the techno scene at its best.zur opens the ball and sets the tone of the ep, a dub and progressive rise, based on a cyclic structure, punctuated by a random reverb. tension is maintained throughout and finally leaves room to filth, whose rhythm is faster, unrestrained, yet keeps an air of suspense and unpredictability - the perfect soundtrack for an exhausting race. looking for trouble plays on a more hypnotic side. with a dark yet electrifying atmosphere, rhythms are exalted by a strident and piercing melody, evolving alongside uncontrollable sounds, throwing us straight into a cosmic trip. faithful to the spirit of the ep, the filth remix delivered by hbtvsk is a perfect exercise of style. without denaturing the original track, the remix revisits it. its’ heavy, powerful mechanism is, at the same time, accurate and sharpened. certain parts of the original track are easily recognizable, which finally get lost in the subtle gearwheel of an anthem tinted by noise.

“ode to eskapism” is dedicated to all of those that use techno as a way in to escapism. to those that use techno as a mental diversion from the perceived unpleasant, boring, arduous, scary, or banal aspects of daily life. those that cannot subsist on the scanty satisfaction they can extort from reality alone. those that feel the need to dissociate from reality in order to experience it. to all of those that emerges recreated, stronger and full of life after a weekend escape into techno. the label bond is the brainchild of swedish techno dj and producer petter b. the concept of the label is “music by djs for djs”. the label focuses on releasing tracks that enable the dj, rather than the producer, to be creative. it is based on that special bond which is created every time a dj combines tracks, loops and sounds live into something new and unique.

“last days and time” is the third studio album by american r&b group earth, wind & fire, released in 1972, their debut album on columbia records. it was recorded at the legendary sunset sound studios in hollywood, california, with founder and multi-instrumentalist maurice white, verdine white and philip bailey. due to their live performances it cemented their status as the main funk band and set the stage for the band’s blockbuster breakthrough. songs on the album like “make it with you” (originally from bread) the pre-“brazilian rhyme” powerful funk sax style “power”, (which sounds like an early version of “serpentine fire”) and “remember the children” are excellent examples of the great songs and albums they have made during their career.

delsin s dance floor focussed inertia series taps up berlin based producer bnjmn for his droid ep. it s a whirring fusion of wild synths and thumping drums. it s tough and direct and, as ever, is filled with unusual sounds and textures. remixes on the flipside come from cassegrain and inland.

one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!

black country overlord justin k broadrick (jesu, godflesh) blesses regis’ downwards fiefdom with two tracks and a tightly sprung rework by surgeon. downwards have really picked the foulest iterations of a grim set for vinyl release, inscribing the industrial-strength torque of nothing is free - which sounds like early kode 9 battered by shapednoise - at 45rpm across the front face, and branding the knuckling 808 snares and distended electro bass blow out of kontorted on its backside. surgeon’s remix of the title tune ranks among his best in many years. trace elements of the original are extruded thru modular kit and remodelled on a bouncing, swerving techno chassis recalling bmb and cub classics, but streaked with sirens and vamped by a marching brass refrain that’s just spoiling for war. the release marks a long overdue overlap between downwards’ and broadrick’s interrelated industrial, noise and techno circles. broadrick was the original drummer for napalm death on their scum (1987) album, before forming the legendary godflesh, and carving out an oeuvre as one of the most feared and respected musicians to emerge from birmingham and the uk ever since.

stone cold classic, although pastime paradise has been reissued a couple of time on compilations every single reissue has used the rocky lp version which is not nearly as good as the original 7inch cut. as we at athens of the north like to do things right we went back to the sony tape vault and had the 7- version transferred for the first time since the o.g 45 was cut. this 45 sounds fantastic, much stronger then the o.g 45 cut so its a no brainer. on the flip we took one of our favourite track from the lp and introduced it to 7inch for the first time, mambotango is a dreamy sountracky latin disco number i used to spin on warm up duty, very new york.

storming into our fifth release from the dirty shores of new jersey, green village is proud to present village elders 001, a compilation ep featuring new material from artists who have already flown the flag for gv. the a-side is held down by the plan b duo of dj spider and dakini9, purveyors of the metro area s dirtiest and deepest house sounds. spider gets toxic a second time,following his 2013 instruction drop with toxic trace 2, a thickly layered deep house cut whose seedy percussion underbelly contrasts vividly with the more traditional deep house pads that accompany it. dakini9 s lost paradise is dark and mysterious like its title, the hats, trumpets, and vocals emerging in tangled webs of dub effects, a strong follow-up to her dope ep for the label. disaroen, a duo from toronto, half of which previously appeared on gv, turns in the most barren of the four tracks, serious doorman, heads-down techno that crackles to life halfway in and an auspicious debut for a promising new group. last is nj heavyweight nicuri, a rising star whose ripples of time closes the ep in his signature searching, melodic style.

born in 2012 on the west side of buenos aires, agrupación ilegal los imparciales is a mix of traditional cumbia, peruvian chicha and instrumental psychedelia. a full live act and often transcendental experience, the group utilizes the classic instrumentation of electric bass, electric guitar, farfisa organ and percussion, an homage to older times, without the crutch of electronic sounds and samples. its a new generation of young and accomplished musicians bringing forward the sounds of a lost era and aesthetic, so relevant in todays modern music landscape. already with two studio albums under their belt and a third on its way, its high time the group is poised for a worldwide release sampler at the hands of names you can trust.

over the course of four albums, manchester based trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader matthew halsall has carved out a niche for himself on the uk music scene as one of it s brightest talents. his languid, soulful music has won friends from jamie cullum and gilles peterson to jazz fm and mojo as well as an ever-growing international following. his label gondwana records is home to gogo penguin and his own albums have found halsall exploring the modal jazz of john and alice coltrane, paying tribute to the hard bop of the late ’50s and early ’60s or most recently on fletcher moss park drawing on eastern influences in his most personal statement yet. his latest album when the world was one is something of a companion piece to fletcher moss park (much of the music was written at the same time) but draws more explicitly on halsall’s love of spiritual jazz and eastern music as well as his own studies in meditation and travels in japan. beautifully recorded at hasall’s favourite studio, 80 hertz in manchester, and engineered by brendan williams and george atkins it features the recording debut of halsall’s large ensemble, the gondwana orchestra, which utilises the exotic flavours of harp, koto and bansuri flute and eastern scales to create a global palate for halsall’s life-affirming sounds.

toms due is talented duo from etruria beat crew, they re now back once again on their home label with two bangers urania and caliope and two remixes. one from nina kravizs trip label young protégé nikita zabelin, the second from micol danieli, italian newcomer artist and owner of 030s vinyl record label. on the a side sit the two original tracks. urania is composed of a powerful techno groove on a simple but strong chord fitting perfectly on the climax of the middle of the track. second comes calliope, a toms due signature heavy rhythm with a happy techno synth melody, a must try for all dancefloors. on b side, nikita zabellin shows once again his minimal approach, pure analogue sounds with a bit of darkness. mico danielis chose to use a never ending rhythm that wont ever leave you alone, a very elaborate arrangement. keep an eye on this italian lady producer!

st. petersburg talent ivan latyshev drops a killer ep on the ever-dependable dessous recordings. ivan has been making waves over the past couple of years with his distinctive brand of deep, groove-heavy house music on labels such as what’s in the box, street king and spaghetti monster - but this to my youth ep sees the young russian step up to another level. the title track shows a deep affiliation for classic house vibes, mixed with some jazzy flourishes and swung grooves. the sense of euphoria is tangible, and the spoken word vocals add a level of house mysticism that will be always welcome on deeper leaning dance-floors. cant go away goes a shade deeper still, bringing layers of delay and reverb to the track that help shape a true slow burner. old ages also highlights ivan’s love of jazz rhythms and sounds, building from a live drum break into a rolling deep house monster - its infectious stuff and suggests ivan latyshev is going to be name to watch in the next months and years.

the rawkers ep…more than 10 years after the release of cassius first album, the duet comes out with a 6 tracks project that mustn’t have left a lot of people whove listened to it indifferent. well, if there are two people who appreciated the ep, it is jay-z & kanye west, aka the throne, who sampled the famous i <3 uso on their track why i love you, turning it into an absolute popular anthem. if the former album of the band was a tribute to adolescence, here it is more about the earliest days of ours, as the song les enfants (children) depicts it. to such an extent that the rawkers ep sounds like a gigantic playground, full of joy and happiness. were glad to repress this record and to give you an opportunity to escape through this enchanting opus, before cassius new album is released.

deep love is the first vinyl release by stefano pozzi, dj producer and musician. it’s very difficult to define his sound: his creative process led him to merge several genres in a very original way. the artist shows us a great talent combining different electronic styles from deep house to soulful house, new jazz and chill out music. stefano is also a guitar player. with his releases, he shows us how to bring guitar sounds together with electronic music in a brilliant way. in this 12 inch ep, that could be defined as deep house, the artist has worked to merge various elements of house music: the warm sound of a moog organ with a deep drum kick, the use of hypnotic and rhythmic vocal samples, the presence of many jazz and soul contaminations due to the acoustic guitar.

hidhawk is the musical alter ego of haydeé jiménez. the mexican-based artist and cultural entrepreneur is running a busy life organizing events and cultural projects alongside the border of mexico and the us. during the night, bedtime stories like alpagain evolve from the field recordings she is collecting on her various journeys. alpagain consists of recordings from istanbul, tijuana, berlin and salzburg, featuring sounds of alpine instruments such as the alphorn, ocarina and hammered dulcimer (hackbrett). the 15 minutes track is brought to the club context on the b-side of the record with a driving remix by gerald peklar and a dub retreatment by analog solutions mastermind eduardo de la calle.

raw machine funk from an intergalactic mind – hakim murphy brings us two contrasting sides of classic analog jams, chicago style. on the a-side, ‘toms from space’ and ‘bgstyle’ both have a melodic nostalgia, the former with pads and drum accents that are almost conversational, the latter’s ringing synth lines cleaving more to the jamal moss school of machines-gone-wild, but still in an introspective mood. the b-side is a heavier affair, ‘stompsb’ coming at you with a barrage of snares, claps and toms that will tickle the more adventurous dancers out there. by ’tf3_2’ the machines are in pure revolt, battery draining and sounds escaping in fits and starts – avant-garde chicago house, no questions asked.

eduardo de la calle brings back to memento his trademark analogue sounds and musical experimentations with the golden archives 1 ep. two tracks that once again define the spanish mavericks personal hybrid of detroit techno and european electronica, veering into psychedelic territory and progressive rhythms, and continuing to explore the outer limits of the underground scene. * missing you (edit)*s chants and deep soulful atmospherics build up with emotional piano melodies, while * quasicalligraphic*s mechanical stabs and ghostly synths are accompanied by spectral percussions and melancholic chords.

after putting the band on the map with their first ep two years ago, the band feathered sun has grown into a life of its own. the more live sets they have played, the better they have defined their style. they are spearheading a brand of sound healing music abstractly narrative, always poetic, sometimes flirting with darkness but always perfectly produced to carry the audience into their own world. feathered sun are the collaborative experiment of nu, jo.ke, raz ohara, chris schwarzwaelder, iannis ritter and acid pauli johannes laumer. each have active and flourishing solo artist careers, albeit still have time to collaborate with one another. the six-strong collective are a close-knit troupe who are primarily based in berlin and lima, peru. live improvisation is ultimately what brought the feathered sun project to life - they are open about their laidback, impromptu approach and this is apparent throughout this ep. side a was primarily crafted in peru by chris schwarzwaelder and jo.ke with raz ohara’s mesmerising vocals. the end material was then sent to nu in berlin who crafted two tracks out of it. the ‘bulbo’ ep shows a willingness to explore different approaches within the collective and the music showcases their long-standing affiliation. it is a downtempo ep that has immaculate instrumentation, dreamy pads and brooding vocals throughout. this is intertwined with organic sounds and moody atmospheric melodies, gives the release a timeless and emotive ambience.

baldos next ep is released on good ratio music, the label run by himself and his buddy carlo. as far as we remember the barcelona based producer had always an affinity for dirty drum-machines rhythms and buzzing analog sounds. baldo can be recognised by his choice of style, a fierce and confident house, pure in intent and effective in execution. and this is exactly what you should expect in this new ep. for the eighth instalment of the label they have the remix coming directly from nyc. the boss of lets play house, jacques renault has remixed the change, giving to the track a whole different mind to the track and making a round ep, ready to roll this summer.
